Tuning Your Ears to the Holy Spirit
If you have read my previous posts about surviving a barrage of gunfire on July 4, 2026, or making it out of a catastrophic subfloor collapse on Labor Day 2026, you know my life has been spared by a fraction of a second. But when people hear those stories, they always focus on the dramatic finales—the bullet passing through my empty chair or the piano I managed to kick aside underwater.
They miss the most important part of the entire equation: the whisper that came before the crash.
Before the physical rescue happens, there is almost always a quiet internal nudge—a sudden, unexplainable prompting to change your routine, leave a room, or wait a few seconds. In our busy, loud world, it is tragically easy to brush these off as random thoughts or paranoia. But when we ignore these whispers, we aren’t just missing a gut feeling; we are actively tuning out the protective frequency of the Holy Spirit.
What Is the Whisper?
The What is the still, small voice of God. It is the internal spiritual radar given to every believer.
In scripture, Elijah didn’t find God in the roaring wind, the shattering earthquake, or the blazing fire. God was in the “gentle whisper” (1 Kings 19:12). In our daily lives, that whisper rarely sounds like a booming voice from the clouds. It feels like a sudden drop in your spirit, an unexplainable urge to check on something, or a gentle instruction to remove yourself from a specific location. It is the quiet authority of the Holy Spirit intervening before the chaos manifests.
Who Speaks, and Who Listens?
The Who behind the whisper is the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus promised would be our Counselor, Comforter, and Guide.
But the secondary Who is the listener. During my 40 years as a contractor and my time in the Marine Corps, I learned that a radio is useless unless it is actively tuned to the correct frequency. If a commander broadcasts a life-saving warning, but the troops have their headsets turned off, the warning is wasted. The Holy Spirit is consistently broadcasting guidance and protection; the question is whether we have trained our spiritual ears to actively listen, or if we have allowed the noise of the world to drown Him out.
Where and When Do We Hear It?
- The When: The whisper almost always arrives moments before you actually need it. It is preemptive. God doesn’t wait for the floor to collapse or the bullets to fly to give you direction; He whispers while you are still sitting safely at your desk or checking your power grid.
- The Where: It happens in the completely ordinary, quiet spaces of your day. It happens while you are doing research at your computer, driving down a familiar highway, or stepping across your own threshold. God uses the ordinary environment to execute extraordinary protection.
Why Must We Stop Ignoring It?
Why does God communicate through whispers instead of shouting? Because a whisper requires you to draw close to hear it.
The adversary operates in loud, blinding chaos—thunderstorms, gun-bursts, panic, and terror. He wants to overwhelm your senses so you can’t think straight. God whispers because He wants intimacy. He steps into our timeline to:
- Shield us from traps the enemy has laid completely out of our line of sight.
- Test our obedience in the small, quiet decisions so we can handle the big, chaotic moments.
- Build our faith so that when we survive the storm, we can look back and trace His voice directly to our rescue.
How to Tune Your Ears: 3 Practical Steps
How do we stop brushing these holy promptings aside as mere coincidences? Here are three practical steps to help you tune your spiritual frequency:
- Practice Immediate Obedience: When you feel a sudden, harmless urge to shift your position, check an electrical line, or check on a loved one, do it immediately. Don’t rationalize it away or wait until it makes logical sense. Obedience sharpens your spiritual hearing.
- Silence the Noise: The enemy keeps our lives packed with constant noise, entertainment, and stress so our minds are too cluttered to perceive a whisper. Intentionally create quiet spaces in your day—even just 10 minutes of silence—to sit and listen.
- Test the Frequency: If a prompting brings a wave of frantic panic and confusion, it is likely the adversary trying to intimidate you. If the nudge brings a clear, sober instruction followed by an underlying sense of peace, that is the Holy Spirit.
When I stood up from my computer desk on July 4th, it didn’t make logical sense. I was just enjoying my evening. But my spirit recognized the Commander’s voice. When we stop giving the adversary credit for our survival, we start realizing just how active, vocal, and protective our Father truly is.
