Sovereignty vs. Chaos: Understanding the Mechanics of Divine Intervention

Understanding the Mechanics of Divine Intervention.

I am starting to notice a pattern. The adversary loves to strike during times of celebration and rest. First, it was the flying bullets on America’s 250th birthday on July 4, 2026, where the Holy Spirit cleanly moved me out of my office chair moments before a bullet pierced it at head height. But the enemy wasn’t done. Two months later, Labor Day—September 7, 2026—felt like a terrifying movie sequel. The adversary struck back, using the cover of a historic storm to orchestrate what should have been a fatal trap.

We often look at chaotic events and wonder if God has lost control. But when you understand the mechanics of divine intervention, you realize that while the enemy is allowed to cause chaos, God always retains ultimate sovereignty.

Here is how the battle between sovereignty and chaos played out in 2ft of water under my living room floor—and why I refuse to live in fear.

What Is the Conflict?

The What of this message is simple: there is a real adversary with very cruel intentions who wants to destroy you, but his power is strictly limited by a sovereign God.

On that stormy Labor Day, heavy rains and severe lightning ripped through our area. Peak power outages hit over 35,000 customers across the region, with over 11,000 outages right here in Jackson County, Missouri. Thanks to God, I was prepared for such a time as this. I fired up my brand-new backup generator, which had only ever been used for monthly testing, to keep my commissary from thawing out and going bad.

Who is the Target, and Who is the Protector?

The Who is twofold: the enemy targets the believer, but the Holy Spirit acts as an active, immediate shield.

By late afternoon, the utility maps showed power was restored, but my interior lines were still down. With 40 years of experience as a licensed contractor, I was entirely confident in my ability to handle the power panel. But as I stepped into the unit, the scene was in shambles. Severe water and wood damage spanned the entire first floor.

Suddenly, I noticed the floor had completely collapsed into the basement just past the entrance hallway. Being nimble my entire life, and having never suffered a single work-related injury in my 40-year career, I carefully stepped near the edges to avoid the weak spots. In an instant, the remaining floor totally gave way beneath my feet.

When and Where Does Sovereignty Overrule Chaos?

The When and Where of divine intervention usually happens at the absolute rock bottom of a crisis.

I instantly lost all sense of direction as I plummeted into the dark basement, trying to leap to control my fall. I landed flat on my back, completely submerged in water deep enough to cover my head, with my feet floating in the air.

Panic tried to claw its way into my chest as everything went pitch black. Then, a massive thud. My deep freezer slid down the muddy embankment of the collapsed floor, striking me squarely in the head like a punch I had never felt before. Before I could process the blow, I used my forearm to shove the freezer aside just as my upright piano came crashing down from the right. By the absolute grace of God, being on my back allowed me to catch the heavy piano with my feet and kick it away to the right side.

I raised my head out of the water just enough to breathe and gather my senses. Blind without my glasses, I felt completely vulnerable. I looked to my left, and—thank you, Holy Spirit—there they were, sitting completely undamaged right in my armpit.

How to Compile Your Scenarios into Praise

How do we move past the trauma of an event like this? We take inventory of the chaos, flip the script, and turn every dangerous variable into a bullet point of praise.

I managed to scale the ruins of the fallen floor and walk back to my RV for temporary shelter. Physically, I disrobed to find only a few scratches on my left leg and a minor cut on my forehead. Mentally, I was in deep shock. I left the power completely disconnected until the following Friday just to process the terror.

For days, I would go back, stare into that crater, and feel the cold intimidation of fear trying to keep me from going back in. I remember saying out loud: “So, the enemy is really trying to kill me.”

But then, a small, still voice whispered straight to my heart:

“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

At that exact moment, the intimidation shattered. I began to look at the mechanics of what actually happened:

  • Directly beneath where I had been standing sat an old furnace with sharp, sheet-metal ductwork facing straight up. It could have easily severed a vital artery. God deflected my fall.
  • The area was filled with jagged, broken wood shards and rusted construction nails that could have punctured me anywhere. God shielded my skin.
  • A massive deep freezer and a heavy piano dropped directly on top of a submerged man. They could have knocked me unconscious to drown, or crushed my chest. God gave my limbs supernatural strength.

Why We Must Give God the True Glory

The Why behind sharing this testimony is to remind you that your survival is not a coincidence.

I could have easily died in that basement, and because I live alone, no one would have known for days. The word of God clearly states we have an adversary with cruel, murderous intentions. But his chaos cannot overrule God’s sovereignty.

When you look back at your own life-threatening trials, stop focusing on how close you came to breaking. Take every single terrifying scenario, compile them together, and compress them into raw praise. If it were not for the grace, mercy, and absolute sovereignty of my Heavenly Father, I wouldn’t be here writing this today.

Join the bigCOMMUNITY Testimony

The adversary wants us isolated and quieted by fear, but our testimonies strip him of his power.

  • Have you ever survived a sequence of events so wild that it could only be explained by a Heavenly shield?
  • Are you currently staring at a “collapsed floor” in your own life, feeling intimidated to face it?

Let’s talk about it in the comments below. Drop your words of praise, your near-miss stories, or your prayer requests. Let’s stand together and give God the true glory!
